BRIEF HISTORY OF CAESAREA
Caesarea is located on the Sharon plain. It was first settled by the Phoenicians in 400 BCE. It was known then as Stratos Tower. Nearby, hundreds of years later, a series of synagogues were built along the coast. Prominence to this area was established when Herod completed construction in 10/9 BCE of an artificial port, naming the city after Augustus Caesar. In 66 CE, 20,000 Jews were killed by Gentiles that significantly triggered THE GREAT REVOLT leading to the destruction of the Second Temple.
Caesarea was partially resettled by the Jews who withstood Roman and Byzantine persecutions. The city was abandoned several times during the ensuring centuries because of Arab invasion (640 CE), Crusader intrusions and Mamluke destruction (1291).
Marshlands, sand dunes and winds essentially desolated the area. However, rebirth occurred when Baron Edmund Rothschild purchased this land (1862). In 1940 a Kibbutz was established at Sdot Yam," Fields of the Sea". The rest is history. Caesarea has become a unique residential and commercial community under the aegis of the Rothschild Foundation. The town is ideally located between the two large urban centers of Tel Aviv and Haifa. The community offers a variety of seaside sports, museums, golf and archeological sites. The ambience is very unique.
Perhaps it is time for you to make your impression on Eretz Yisrael and in particular, Caesarea.
